Jim Carrey must go to trial over ex-girlfriend’s suicide

Jim Carrey is headed to trial for the suicide of Cathriona White, his ex-girlfriend. White’s mother Brigid Sweetman and estranged husband Mark Burton are taking Carrey to court in a “wrongful death” lawsuit. The duo are claiming that the famous actor used his “wealth, influence and celebrity status” to obtain prescription drugs for White. White, an Irish makeup artist, was just shy of 30 years old when she fatally overdosed in her California home during September 2015.

Carrey and his lawyer, Raymond Boucher, have been doing their best to try to get the case thrown out of court. In the past, Carrey has commented that the lawsuit is “predatory” and “malicious.” However, it seems their attempts have failed. Jude Deidre Hill has ruled that the case will continue. Carrey is facing allegations under the Drug Dealer Liability Act as well as the wrongful death claim. Judge Hill also denied Carrey’s privacy request and ruled that the jury should have access to the claim that White had been infected with three sexually transmitted diseases because of Carrey. The “evidence” will be text messages from White to Carrey over her concerns about having an STD. Carrey reportedly dismissed White’s concerns, stating that she must have gotten the diseases from someone else.

Earlier this year, the Daily Mail reports that White had contracted herpes and chlamydia, but in 2016, the Mail reported she had herpes type 1, herpes type 2 and gonorrhea.

Sources say that Carey and White broke up after the STD confrontation, with Carrey telling his girlfriend she had “become too much drama.”

Carey and his lawyer have reiterated that while they could just go for a settlement, they have no intention of doing so. Carrey has maintained his innocence regarding his ex-girlfriend’s death, but Burton and Sweetman are convinced that Carrey’s hands aren’t entirely clean.

The Los Angeles Times reports that White was found dead in her home, pill bottles bearing the name “Arthur King” were discovered near her body. The coroner’s report revealed that White had overdosed on a cocktail of drugs including Percocet, Propanolol, and Ambien — none of which had been prescribed to her by a doctor.

While the famous movie star has claimed that White stole the drugs from him, ex-husband Burton believes that Carrey gave them to her.

In a statement last year, Burton and Sweetman’s attorney Michael Avenatti said, “The lies from Jim Carrey and his handlers need to stop. Instead of attacking a grieving family in an effort to avoid responsibility, why don’t they just try telling the truth about how Carrey gave Cat the STDs and then gave her the illegal drugs? Unlike Hollywood handlers, lab results do not lie.”

In response to these remarks, Carrey called the lawsuit a “terrible shame,” and added, “It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away. But there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world.”

What really transpired between Cathriona White and Jim Carrey, and the true details of her suicide, may never really be known to the public. It’s clear that Burton and Sweetman are bent on making Carrey pay for White’s suicide, and that Carrey is prepared to fight them every step of the way. While Carrey has made headlines for his controversial remarks in the past, many are wondering if this trial will end his career.
